When Is Form 2290 Due?

The Form 2290 due date for the 2026-2027 tax period is August 31, 2026. The HVUT tax period runs from July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2027. All vehicles in use at the start of the period must be filed by August 31.

Due Dates by First-Use Month

For vehicles first used after July, the deadline is the last day of the month following the first-use month:

• July: August 31 | August: September 30
• September: October 31 | October: November 30
• November: December 31 | December: January 31
• January: February 28 | February: March 31
• March: April 30 | April: May 31 | May: June 30

Penalties for Missing the Deadline

• Late-filing penalty: 4.5% of tax due per month (up to 22.5%)
• Late-payment penalty: 0.5% per month
• Interest: Accrues from the original due date
